One fall morning in 1957, Nick Zeoli, then a physical education teacher at the "old" Wilton High School (Cider Mill), gathered a group of 10th graders first practice session of Wilton's first football season.

That first season was spent in basic drills practicing fundementals, with several scrimmage games to liven things up. The following year, with an expanded squad of 10th and 11th graders, Wilton's first varsity season began. The Warriors had a five game schedule, playing Ridgefield, Carmel, Bethel, Brewster, and St. Luke's. They ended the season with a 2-3 record. In 1959 Somers, N.Y. was added to the schedule and their record improved to 5-1.

The schedule continued to expand and the teams had great success. The 1960 record was 6-1 and in 1961 they were unbeaten, with an 8-0 record and a Class C State Championship. The late John Corr, then a senior, led the squad to impressive wins over Ridgefield, Barlow, Bethel and a 48-8 thumping of Trumbull.

The 1962 team repeated as Class C State Champions with a 7-1 overall record. The only loss was a contriversial 8-6 battle at New Canaan in the rain and mud. This was the first Wilton / New Canaan encounter.

Wilton avenged this loss the next year, beating New Canaan 20-12 and posting an overall season record of 5-3. In 1964 they improved to 7-1-1, beating McMahon 26-14, Trumbull 26-0, and overcomming a 26-0 deficit to tie New Canaan 26-26.

Coach Tom Fujitani joined the coaching staff in 1966 and worked as Nick's assistant for three years. In 1968 Nick Zeoli coached his last season, and Wilton's Memorial Stadium was dedicated. In 1969 when Tom Fujitani took over as head coach, he introduced the wishbone offense, and the team posted a season record of 6-2.

In 1971 Wilton joined the FCIAC. Although WHS was not yet on a parity basis with the other schools in terms of student enrollment, the Warriors had a very respectable 4-4-1 record for their maiden season in the league. Since 1971 Wilton has logged an enviable record in the FCIAC. In 1978 and 1984 the Warriorsplayed in FCIAC Championship and in the State Championship games. Also, in 1988 Wilton won the FCIAC Championship defeating Greenwich 19-7.

Many of the caches that worked in the program are natives of the area. Nich Zeoli played football at Staples and is a member of their All-Time Football Team. Tom Fujitani is another area graduate, having played both ways at halfback for the Greenwich Cardinals. Tom went on to play halfback and spilt end at the university of Bridgeport where he played with John Corr from Wilton. Paul McNulty also graduated from Staples and continued his football career at Jacksonville University. Following graduation he coached at a local high school team in Jacksonville for three years before returning to Jacksonville University to coach. After two seasons, he returned to Farfield County and joned the WHS coaching staff. In 1998 Paul also was named the head lacrosse coach to replace Guy Whitten who had been the coach for 26 years.

Tim Eagen played high school football in Norwalk at Central Catholic in the early 1970's. In fact, Tim directed Central Catholic to a 6-6 tie with Fujitani's Warriors in 1971. Tim went on to Springfield College where he earned his B.S. in physical education.

In June 1994 Nick Zeoli retired as athletic director after 25 years in that position. In honor of his significant contributions to Wilton High School sports, the field house was renamed The Nicholas T. Zeoli Field House.

Douglas K. Rubin was named the new Director of Athletic Student Activities in June 1998 and continues to promote the fine tradition of men's and women's sports at Wilton High School.

Now, entering the 21st Century, the 2000 Warriors are looking for both an FCIAC and State Titles! Come out and support the cause.
